As a company with global operations, we aim to be a trustworthy partner for our employees, our worldwide supplier network, and society at large. In order to achieve this, we pool all of the forces available to us and are committed to focusing on diversity within the Company, which we see as a prerequisite for our capacity to innovate. We are also making our contribution as part of society through our efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. We have developed a mobile laboratory, the MAN Coronavirus Diagnostic Vehicle, to detect SARS-CoV-2 infections quickly and safely in hotspots. Acting responsibly is a concept that also extends to our supply chain. With the sustainability rating, MAN has introduced a central tool to strengthen sustainable action among its suppliers.

Plurality and inclusion
RAISING AWARENESS
OF DIVERSITY
RAISING AWARENESS OF DIVERSITY

Plurality and inclusion are crucial factors in MAN’s quest to be successful as a company. A culturally diverse workforce, for example, has a positive impact on customer loyalty by putting us in a position to better understand the needs and behavior of international customers. As a result, MAN benefits from an environment that puts a culture of respect and tolerance into practice in all areas of our Company. This forms the basis for our ability to pick up on and acknowledge a whole range of different outlooks and ideas, and to promote them in a targeted manner.

Since September 2020, all managers at MAN have been involved in sessions designed to raise awareness of the importance of diversity in the Company as a prerequisite for corporate success as part of the “Skill Capture for Inclusive Leadership Labs” program.

During these sessions, they learn methods that they can use to strengthen plurality and inclusion in their everyday work. The Skill Capture Labs are designed to use suggestions and ideas, but also targeted provocation, to allow MAN managers to set old patterns of thinking aside.

The idea is to help them identify unconscious bias and to better recognize and promote skills within their teams. Almost 1,500 managers have been trained to date. The summer of 2021 will mark the start of the Skill Capture journey for international managers, with the aim of establishing plurality and inclusion even more firmly in MAN’s corporate culture.

MOBILE DIAGNOSTICS
MOBILE DIAGNOSTICS

Flexibility and speed are crucial when it comes to detecting SARS-CoV-2 infections as early on as possible to prevent them from spreading further. This is an area in which we are making a key contribution with the MAN Coronavirus Diagnostic Vehicle, which can be used in hotspots to detect SARS-CoV-2 infections quickly and safely. The laboratory on wheels is based on MAN’s TGE van. With a capacity of more than 500 PCR tests per vehicle per day, the diagnostic vehicle is ideally suited to performing tests directly on location whenever a potential infection is suspected — for example, in nursing homes, schools, companies, or other settings.

Thanks to the state-of-the-art PCR test devices on board the MAN TGE, the test results are available within as little as 39 minutes — making them some of the fastest approved PCR test devices currently available on the market. This means that the entire process of swab collection, sample preparation, and testing takes less than one hour. The results are transmitted from the test device to a laptop in real time, allowing them to be sent directly from the MAN van to the responsible health authorities, government agencies, or tested individuals as quickly as possible. The fully automated analysis process and end-to-end digital process chain help to save precious time in breaking infection chains and stopping the spread of the virus.

STRENGTHENING SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAINS

Acting responsibly is a concept that also extends to our supply chain. At MAN, our aim is to be aware of the main sustainability risks in our supply chain at all times and to address them effectively. One central tool used as part of this process is the sustainability rating (S rating) system, which has applied to procurement processes throughout the Group since November 2020. It is used to check suppliers’ sustainability performance and to identify opportunities for continuous improvement. By tying sustainability performance directly to contract award eligibility, MAN and the Volkswagen Group are aiming to send out a signal to their suppliers and partners to encourage collaboration allowing sustainability aspects to permeate the supply chain. The primary objective is not to exclude suppliers from the supply chain, but rather to promote the further development of those suppliers whose performance is not yet satisfactory.

More than 1,500 of our suppliers have already completed the qualification process to date. The S rating is reviewed in a process comprising several stages, for which we use the Volkswagen Group’s system. In an initial step, a risk exposure is calculated based on a combination of the country risk and the supplier’s corporate processes and policies. The company’s sustainability performance is analyzed using a standardized Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). This sustainability Self-Assessment Questionnaire is checked and validated by a service provider via a central platform. In 2020, 86% of our sales revenue was generated with suppliers that completed an SAQ. 72% of our annual sales revenue is attributable to suppliers with positive S rating results.
